The AA is critically reliant on the collision of productive and social space, the constant interaction between many different academic programmes and the intimate engagement of students and tutors with the diverse agendas that permeate contemporary architectural discourse worldwide. The AA represents a domestic, non-institutional form of architecture that is entirely unique.
Having originally occupied numbers 34 and 35 Bedford Square in 1917, the AA now inhabits all of the buildings from number 32 to 39, in addition to a set of spaces on Morwell Street, which would once have been the mews behind the Georgian terraced houses. These properties allow all of the current students and staff of the school, aside from those studying and teaching in Hooke Park, to be located in one place; a rarity in its long and varied history.
Today the AA retains many of the unusual, idiosyncratic qualities of the spaces throughout these buildings that generations of students and teachers have embraced, transformed and appropriated. Much of the character, tradition and diversity of the school can be found in its inhabitation of domestic space. The stately Georgian rooms of our home on Bedford Square are now inhabited not only by students and staff, but also by a broad range of cultural, historical and technical resources that facilitate the highest level of contemporary architectural education.

Hooke Park is a growing educational space that combines forest, studio, workshop and building site. The site is home to the Design and Make programme and hosts short residential workshops for visiting groups of students from throughout the school. Design, construction and landscape-focused projects undertaken at the facility are supported by a diverse team of expert practitioners, including craftspeople, designers, engineers, robotic technicians and foresters. Historically a deer-hunting enclosure, the site is a designated Ancient Woodland and forms a part of the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Acquired by the AA in 2002, it now comprises a range of workshops and assembly spaces in addition to experimental fabrication equipment and student accommodation.
